Steps to Use

  1. Detect - Click "Detect Available Package Managers"
  2. Shows which package managers are installed on your system
  3. Status shows as green βœ“ when detected

  4. Select - Check which package managers to clean

  5. pip and npm are checked by default (most common)
  6. Uncheck system packages you don't want to clean

  7. Scan - Click "Scan for Caches"

  8. Finds cache directories for selected package managers
  9. Shows progress bar during scanning

  10. Review - Check results in table

  11. Name: Package manager name
  12. Size: Cache directory total size
  13. Files: Number of cache files

  14. Preview - Keep "Dry Run" checked (default)

  15. Click "Clean Selected Caches"
  16. Shows what would be deleted without actually deleting

  17. Cleanup - Uncheck "Dry Run" and run again

  18. Click "Clean Selected Caches" to actually delete
  19. Files permanently removed

Steps to Use

  1. Add Folders - Click "βž• Add Folder"
  2. File browser opens
  3. Select a project directory
  4. Can add multiple folders

  5. Configure - Select cache types to clean

  6. All types checked by default
  7. Uncheck types you want to skip
  8. Most common: pycache and .egg-info

  9. Scan - Click "Scan for Caches"

  10. Scans each selected folder (limited to 3 levels deep for safety)
  11. Shows progress bar

  12. Review Results - Check what was found

  13. Shows cache locations with sizes and file counts
  14. Only Python cache patterns shown (source code not included)

  15. Preview - Keep "Dry Run" checked (default)

  16. Click "Clean Selected Caches"
  17. See exactly what would be deleted

  18. Cleanup - Uncheck "Dry Run" and confirm

  19. Click "Clean Selected Caches"

Settings Explained

  • Keep cache files newer than: 7 days (default)
  • Cache files newer than this are preserved
  • Old caches (older than 7 days) are deleted
  • Change to higher value to preserve more recent caches

  • Include orphaned packages: (For system caches only)

  • Unchecked by default
  • When checked: also removes unused packages

  • Dry Run (Preview Only): β˜‘ CHECKED by default

  • Shows what will be deleted WITHOUT deleting
  • Highly recommended to always check first
  • Uncheck only after verifying results

πŸ” Scan for Caches

  • What it does: Searches for caches
  • When to click: After selecting folders or package managers
  • What happens: Progress bar shows, results populate table
  • Time: 1-30 seconds depending on folder size

🧹 Clean Selected Caches

  • What it does: Deletes found caches
  • When to click: After reviewing Scan results
  • What happens: If "Dry Run" checked, shows preview. If unchecked, actually deletes.
  • Requires: Scan must be run first

Scenario 1: Clean System Caches (5 minutes)

User opens Cortex Cleaner
        ↓
Goes to "Package Manager Caches"
        ↓
Clicks "Detect Available Package Managers" ← Sees: pip, npm detected βœ“
        ↓
Clicks "Scan for Caches" ← Sees: pip 313.3 MB, npm 450 MB
        ↓
Checks "Dry Run" (default), clicks "Clean Selected Caches" ← Preview shown
        ↓
Unchecks "Dry Run", clicks "Clean Selected Caches" ← Caches deleted βœ“
        ↓
Result: ~760 MB freed! βœ“

Scenario 2: Clean Project Caches (10 minutes)

User opens Cortex Cleaner

Safety Guardrails

Before You See Deletion

1. "Dry Run" is CHECKED by default

Undo / Recovery

If files are accidentally deleted:

1. Backups created:
   Location: ~/.cortex_cleaner_backups/
   These are package list backups (can help verify what was installed)

2. Git recovery:
   If project is in git: git checkout (restores from history)

3. Recache:
   First project load will rebuild caches

But the key is: Dry Run mode prevents this in the first place!

Color Meanings

  • 🟒 Green - Success, detected, working
  • 🟠 Orange - Warning, requires attention
  • πŸ”΅ Blue - Information, clickable, important
  • πŸ”΄ Red - Error, something failed

In UI: - Green checkmarks (βœ“) = Detected, ready - Blue buttons = Important actions - Orange/bold text = Important warning (Dry Run)


Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Enter = Click focused button
  • Tab = Move between controls
  • Space = Check/uncheck checkboxes
  • Ctrl+A = Select text in input fields
